Germs and Hygiene Literacy Activities for Preschool

Germs and Hygiene activities provide an exciting avenue for preschoolers to develop their literacy skills. Through everything from sight word books to word strips and worksheets- there is something for everyone!

Sight Word Book “Can” (Printable)– Have student color and cut out the pages of this book. They will start to recognize the sight words I, can, and see with repetition.

Word Strips (Printable) – These word cards are great for emerging readers & spellers. You can place them in a pocket chart for easy display or simply paste them to the wall. Then students can copy the word when they need it. Seeing the words repetitively helps to learn sight words faster. The strips also have the option for copying the word right underneath for handwriting practice.

Beginning Letter Sounds (Printable) Cut out each grid and have students use clothespins, dot markers, or dot stickers to choose the letter makes the beginning sound.

Preschool Dental Health Teeth Writing Activity– This free writing activity includes a large tooth and upper and lower-case tooth cards for matching and laminating for a dry-erase writing activity. Use toothbrushes for a fun way to erase each letter as you write them!

ABC Tooth Match – Use these to cute ABC letter match to strengthen your littles ability to recognize upper and lower case letters. Keep this low prep activity on hand for a great reinforcement literacy activity.

Dental Health & Hygiene with Teeth & Mouth Flash Cards & Picture Cards – Use these cards for fine motor skills practice, flashcard relay races, flashcard scavenger hunts, flashcard hopscotch, flashcard go fishing, flashcard patterns, flashcard memory games, write-the-room activities and so much more!

Hygiene Heroes: Learning About Staying Clean and Healthy- This bundle has coloring pages, interactive sentences, clear instructions, and learning objectives all surrounding hygiene. Your littles will be educated on how to stay clean all while learning literacy skills.

If I Do Not Cover My Sneeze- This is a cute and simple writing project to wrap up a unit about germs and sickness. The students trace the words, complete the sentence and draw a picture of themselves complete with a tissue.

Brush the ABC’s– Put this printable on card stock paper and either laminate or place in a plastic sleeve. Write alphabet letters on the white teeth then say a letter and have your little one erase it using a clean toothbrush. Now you have a literacy and fine motor activity.

Downright Disgusting Germ– This activity allows students to create their own downright disgusting germ. Start this lesson by reading Those Mean Nasty Dirty Downright Disgusting but…Invisible Germs by Judith Anne Rice. Activity includes activity explanation, create your own germ worksheet and sample germ cut-outs.

Germ and Hygiene Math Activities for Preschoolers

Germ and Hygiene math activities offer a creative and engaging way for preschoolers to develop their mathematical skills. By incorporating learning about germs and good hygiene into math exercises, children can learn basic concepts such as counting, sorting, and pattern recognition in a fun and interactive manner.

Number Play Doh Mats (Printable)-Playdoh mats help students learn and identify numbers, count, and develop fine motor control as they place the playdoh on the number and also put the correct number of teeth.

Counting Pathway Game (Printable)  Pathway games make counting and adding come to life. Roll one dice and move the corresponding number or roll two dice, add the numbers and move the total.

Counting Clip Cards (Printable) –Works on counting skills, number identification, and fine motor skills. Have student place a clothespin, dotsticker, or dot marker on the correct number after counting. The pinching of a clothespin also works on finger strengthening for fine motor skills.

Preschool Tooth Counting Game- This cute tooth counting game is perfect to keep for students to use after they finish other activities or to start/end the day. Match the tooth brushes with the amount of teeth they count.

Number Find & Trace (Printable This activity helps with number recognition & formation. Put a pile of numbers in front of your student. Give them a sheet with the dotted numbers. Have the student pick one number from the pile and trace it once they find it on their board.

Germ Counting Mats- This counting mat is also great for working on those math skills like counting, addition and subtraction. Keep the conversation going around germs while working on their math skills .

Germ Packet- This packet has color and black in white activities such as Sudoku, Count and Clip, Germ Math, Germ 1-20 strip puzzle, Germ Patterns. Let your littles choose their worksheet for the day from the packet.

Race to Lose a Tooth: A Counting Game- This fun counting game works on their counting, fine motor, and critical thinking skills. To start off the game the kids need to place a marshmallow on each circle so that each player starts with a full mouth of marshmallow “teeth.”

Dental Health Color by Number Activities – These free printable dental health color by number worksheets include 8 pages (plus color answer key and terms of use page.) Your little will enjoy learning their numbers, working on coordination and bringing this picture to life!

Count the Germs- This simple and no prep (other than printing) worksheet will help your little with their counting skills. Counting the germs will be a fun way to start their math lesson.

These Germ and Hygiene activities are an excellent way to help preschoolers develop fine motor skills.

Cutting Strips (Printable) – Cut out these strips and have students practice cutting or tracing straight lines, curved lines, squiggly lines, or zig zag lines. This is great for scissor practice and fine motor development.

No Germs Here- Teach your kids about germs with this hands on sensory bag activity! Trace your little ones hands on a ziplock bag, dump hair gel and pom poms inside and spread them out! Use a utensil to have them wipe the germs off their hands!

Each illustration is in black and white so the child can utilize their creativity to color it themselves. Your child will create their own story!

Wash Your Hands Craft – All you need are some craft supplies you are sure to have at home, like construction paper, glue, googly eyes, and scissors. Follow the instructions provided germy hand craft and when you have finished it you can hang it up next to the sink to serve as a fun reminder to wash your hands.

Create Your Own Pet Germ Craft- Kids will love making their own germ. All you need are some very common supplies like paper plates, paint, and pipe cleaners, and a few other things that are most likely lying around. Follow the simple instructions to create your own germ and when complete, be sure to put it next to the sink.

Happy Teeth Headband- Create a headband out of construction paper. Cut the teeth out and glue them. around the headband. Your littles can decorate this as they please!

Tooth Craftivity- Have your littles build their very own tooth-craftivity! Use the printables included and have some fun adding other additional items to customize them even more. Follow this up with another germ and hygiene educational item.

Germs Activity Book- A fun book showing germs in different places and how to get rid of them. Coloring, creative activities and most importantly- understanding hygiene!

Build Your Own Germ Craft- Create different shaped germs and the pieces to go along with it. Let your littles design their germ however they’d like! This is a fun way to talk about an important topic- hygiene! (The blog sited, Messy Little Monster, has a downloadable options for the eyes below.)

Microbe Mania – Using playdoh, create a fungi, bacteria or virus, and whether it is a good or bad microbe. While teaching your littles what a microbe is, using germ as a term is fine too! Find a homemade playdoh recipe here too!

Germ and Hygiene Physical Development Activities for Preschool

Germ and Hygiene physical activities are a hands on way to support the physical development of preschoolers.

By engaging in activities with different behaviors and habits, children can improve their gross motor skills, hygienic habits, and coordination.

From washing their hands, to playing games and practicing different scenarios of good hygiene they will be sure to have a great time learning how to keep those pesky germs away!

Fun Handwashing & a Helpful Handwashing Song- Get your littles into the habit of washing their hands often! Practicing with a fun song will also help them remember to wash because it’s fun! When you get home, before/after a meal, after using the restroom, etc. implement a song and remind them it’s time to wash up!

Can You Move Like Game- This 40+ page print and go packet is perfect for working on the concepts of germs and hygiene. You will find 20 scenarios to identify what you should or shouldn’t do (alog with other activities) that can be acted out or created to be a physical development lesson. Get those littles moving while working on these helpful scenarios.

Handwashing Activity for Children with Balloons and Soap- These balloon hands had circles and dots put on them with washable markers that represented germs. The students then washed the balloon hands in a big tub of soapy water and scrubbed the hands with the soapy water thoroughly to wash away all the, “Germs.”

Germ Juice Creation- Give your littles the chance to change the look of each hand sanitizer and soap. Have an array of supplies and crafts ready for them to spruce up these items. This will make these items customized, fun and still a household necessity to keep the germs away.

“Hot Potato” Germ Exchange– Gather students together in a circle, group or even in a pair. Engage them in a quick “hot potato” game using a sponge dusted with flour, or just a ball. Pass the hot potato around and have them focus on the “germs” being passed around!

Germ and Hygiene Science and Sensory Activities for Preschool

Science is a great experience for kids to explore another side of learning. The projects and activities they start now in preschool will feed their minds.

Giving them the spark for science while engaging their senses makes for your preschooler to be an all around learner. Understanding how germs and bacteria grows and spreads is the perfect subject for science time.

Utilize what you have around your home or even around your community to learn more about how important hygiene is!

Disappearing Germ- Print this page. Place the page in a large ziplock bag. Trace the child’s hands on the plastic bag with a permanent marker. Lower into a bowl full of water. The germs magically disappear!

Stay Away Tooth Decay Experiment- A science egg experiment to teach my students what drinks were good and bad for your teeth, and how to keep good dental hygiene. The purpose of this science experiment is to show kids how certain drinks affect teeth and why brushing is important. The four liquids I use to fill the cups are milk, grape juice (welch’s), dark soda (Coke), and water.

Moldy Bread Experiment- This free science activity is a brilliant way to get physical results your littles will actually see. You just need three slices of bread, some grubby hands (soon to be washed!), a bar of soap, some sealable plastic bags. Have fun and get your science on!

Fake Snot Slime Recipe- This fake snot slime sticks and oozes, but the slime easily lifts off of hard surfaces much like silly putty. The texture of this slime makes a great sensory project to follow up a day learning about the importance of good hygiene.

Hey Riddle Riddle” Sensory Bin Riddles- In this activity, students will read or listen to a riddle, find the hygiene themed object or word in the sensory bin that matches the description.

Sensory Experiment Using Pepper & Soap- Use black pepper as the germs then follow the instructions utilizing the soapy water to show the “germs” running away! A fun way to talk, feel and see how germs spread and “run away.”

Hand Washing Sensory Bin- This easy and inexpensive to make with items at home. A bin, water, soap, favorite dolls/figures/cars, scrubbers, and a towel. After you’ve worked on hand washing and singing songs to show the correct time to wash for, add some glitter to their hands to test it out and let them clean their favorite toys!

Tooth Brushing Sensory Activity- The directions are provided on how to turn plaster mix, the bottom of soda bottles and some water into your littles very own “teeth model.” They will scrub out the “plaque” and learn about healthy habits. This sensory activity will help your child get comfortable brushing their teeth and even visiting the dentist.

Germ and Hygiene Sort & Sequencing Activities for Preschoolers

Learning to sort objects in various ways helps your child develop the cognitive skills to be able to recognize and create patterns, think logically, and put things in order or sequence.

Sort and sequencing activities also supports children in participating in daily tasks, like clean-up time. Why not make it fun and healthy learning all about germs and hygiene?

Hygiene Sort- Students can sort pictures of hygiene items and cleaning products that are common items in a home. A great activity to show all products used to stay clean but in different ways!

It also taught them that germs have different shapes, sizes, and types. It’s a good idea to show them flashcards with real bacteria on them, so they can have an idea what it really looks like in real life.

Germ Pattern Worksheets- Find germ worksheets to trace, finish the pattern and play a fun memory game! These will help educate on creating a sequence along with some other bonuses included!

Don’t Let Your Dragon Spread Germs Sorting Activity- After reading “Don’t Let Your Dragon Spread Germs” have your littles work on this cut, paste and sort activity. If you don’t have the book, there is a link to a read aloud one online.

Personal Hygiene Tools Montessori Sorting Activity My Body- Teach children about self care using this 20 card printable activity. The cards show kids different products that they may need for body care, dental care, hair care, and nail care.

Germ and Hygiene Theme Discussions and Graphing Ideas for Preschoolers

Germ and Hygiene discussions and graphing activities offer a structured yet exciting way for preschoolers to under hygiene.

By engaging in discussions, children develop their language skills, learn to articulate their thoughts and build a deeper understanding of germs. Not being able to see germs doesn’t mean they aren’t there.

Challenge their brains and offer new or better habits to their daily life.

How Often Should We Wash Our Hands?:

  • Discuss the different times it’s critical to wash their hands.
  • Create a chart showing when they should wash their hands and the consequences of not having good hygiene.

How Many Times Do We Brush and Floss Our Teeth?:

  • Discuss the importance of brushing and flossing their teeth twice a day.
  • Create a chart or graph reflecting what happens if our teeth aren’t brushed, flossed and brushed/flossed.

Why Do We Floss & Brush Our Teeth?:

  • Discuss cavities and plaque.
  • Talk about how to prevent plaque and bad breath. Talk about the forming of cavities and what happens when they occur.

Hygienic Items:

  • Compare the different items we can use for hygiene. (Soap, shampoo, & sanitizer vs toilet paper, laundry detergent, & disinfectant wipes.
  • Using a chart, split these items up to show how both keep us clean but in different ways.

Nail Trimming:

  • Discuss the importance of trimming finger and toe nails.
  • Create a chart showing the dangers of not keeping nails trimmed. (Broken nails, ingrown nails, damaging their nails causing pain, and bacteria growing under their nails.

Keeping Areas Tidy:

  • Hygiene is a variety of areas throughout our lives.
  • Jump into thoughts about cleaning up their rooms, keeping their bathrooms clean, wearing clean clothes, having good eating manners, and so on.

Happy Teeth vs Sad Teeth:

  • Create a graph showing which foods create “happy” and “sad” (healthy vs not) teeth.
  • Go into discussion of why they need a balanced diet, water and good brushing habits to keep their teeth happy!

Body Hygiene Care:

  • Talk to your littles about the importance of showering/taking baths to clean their body everyday.
  • Create charts showing the different items they use for their hair, nails, body, and household items.

Reading Woodland Animal books aloud is a delightful way to introduce preschoolers to staying safe in a dangerous situation. These books captivate young minds with engaging stories, colorful illustrations, and fascinating facts about wild animals.

Germs Are Not for Sharing- This book teaches the basics of not spreading them: Cover up a sneeze or cough. Hug or blow kisses when you’re sick. And most of all, wash your hands!
