Potty training is one of the most exciting milestones for parents – hurray for no diapers! – but it’s a journey to get to that point. One of the best tricks to help parents is to use potty training printables to keep track of your child’s progress and offer rewards for all of their hard work.
Many kids love reward charts; they’re motivated by applying new stickers. Some parents offer rewards after so many stickers are on the chart, but that’s not a requirement. Many kids are simply motivated by the chart alone!

How to Use Potty Training Charts Successfully
You’ll want to make sure that you use a potty training chart successfully. I suggest some sort of reward, even if that means giving your child an extra sticker. Most kids work best towards some sort of reward; you get to decide the reward.
It doesn’t have to be a new toy! Potty training often takes a few months, so a big toy might be the reward for a month of using the potty exclusively, but you don’t want to buy a new toy every week.
Rewards can be simple like a piece of candy then they are dry for the entire day, or a small sticker for their little sticker books. Go to the Dollar Tree and make a box of cheap toys that your child can take as a reward at the end of the day.
Here are some tips for using potty training chart!
- Use stickers to keep track of your child’s progress.
- Let your toddler put on the stickers, even if it takes more time. Doing so encourages their sense of success and autonomy.
- Be clear with the reward and what your child has to do to earn what the reward is.
- In the early days, your child will have a harder time avoiding accidents. Focus on reward and complimenting good habits, such as pulling up and down pants, knowing to go to the bathroom, and washing their hands.
Skills for Potty Training You Can Reward
We always want our toddlers to feel encouraged throughout the potty training process. A lot of skills are needed throughout the process, so even if your child is having accidents, rewarding them for what they do properly and correctly is more effective.
No shaming!
Here are some things you can include in your reward charts.
- Knowing what their body is telling them
- Telling the difference between peeing and pooping.
- Getting to the toilet in time.
- Pulling down their pants
- Sitting on the toilet
- Using the toilet or potty for pooping or peeing.
- Not falling off or in the toilet
- Trying to wipe with toilet paper
- Pulling up their pants
- Getting dressed
- Flushing the toilet
- Washing and drying hands
Finding opportunities to focus on the good and the improvements your child makes throughout the potty training process is most effective. Positive rewards work!
