Teaching little ones the alphabet is so much fun! One of my favorite letters to teach is the letter S!
Sometimes the S sound can be hard for little ones to articulate, so it is important to have lots of tools in your teacher bag to help toddlers and preschoolers not only learn the letter S, but also say it correctly.

What are the Benefits of Using Songs to Teach Letters?
Music is an amazing tool that I love using to teach. Children learn songs so quickly and music makes learning fun.

Improves Listening Skills
Listening to the song carefully will teach children to be better listeners. A tip to help encourage them to listen to the song is to close their eyes, sit criss cross and hold their hands in their lap.
When kids are listening intently to the song and having fun, they can learn so much.

The rhythm of music is great for teaching children proper pronunciation. The constant repeating sounds in music is great for learning the repeating sounds of English.
Creates a Fun Learning Environment
It’s no secret that children love moving and grooving to music. Music cultivates a fun learning environment for children.
Music allows children to experience a multisensory and helps assist with cognitive development.
Helps with Memory
Recalling a song that your toddler has been trying to memorize is great for memory. It is truly amazing how quickly children can remember songs.

Learning letters is so important for young children. The better they understand letter, the sounds they make and their functions the better readers they will be.
Letters are the foundation to reading.
Increased Reading Fluency
Because the foundation of reading is letters, knowing the sounds and functions of letters will make increases the fluency of young readers.
Having the ability to sound out words that are unfamiliar is an important skill to have and it all starts with learning letters.
Develops Confident Readers
Knowing letters helps to develop confident readers. When children are more aware of the functionality of letters, they will be more confident in their reading skills.
It can be so discouraging for children to have trouble reading. The foundation for confident readers starts with letters.
Develops Recognition Skills
Once your child starts to recognize letters, they will see them everywhere. Not only will they start recognizing letters they will recognize other things more quickly like shapes and colors!
Tips for Introducing Songs with The Letter S
Introducing new songs to kiddos is so much fun, but it can be challenging too. Kiddo’s might get overwhelmed with too many songs at once, so here are my top tips for introducing letter S songs to children.
- Introduce 1 song at a time
- Listen to the song a few times
- Pass an object around to the beat of the music
- Sing the words to the song and have them repeat
- Create movements that go along with the song

Smoothie
I don’t know what it is about smoothies, but my kiddos love them! Smoothies would be a great snack for your S lesson.
Here is my recipe:
- 1.5 cups of milk (you can use almond, cow’s milk,oat)
- 2 tablespoons of PB2
- Your favorite protein
- 1-1.5 cups of frozen berries
You can add in anything else you like! This feeds about 3 littles for reference.
Strawberry Short Cake
Um, YUM! I love strawberry shortcake! This is a perfect yummy snack to include in your S themed lesson.
You can totally do the store bought items, but if you are looking for homemade this recipe is yummy!

Books are a great way to learn letters. You can have your kids listen for words that start with S and even point out the S they see on each page!
